ABOUT

Alice Sherborne is an artist based in the UK who creates paintings of symmetrical shapes, interpreted from theories of a holographic universe, spirituality and studies on symbolism in nature and society.

I turn the canvas into a portal; translating thoughts into an otherworldly alphabet of symbolic form.

In my work I interpret how our thoughts develop in the mental plane. The shapes unfurl, toeing the line between abstract and figurative; what might initially read as flora, stems curling outward, never fully asserts themselves as literal. Instead they hover, open to symbolic interpretation.

My practice allows me space for rethinking symbols and patterns in our modern world. I envision the power that alternative emblems could give us; to organise and disrupt, to remind ourselves of an innate connection with nature and the obscure force that pervades all.

I paint intuitively, like I am slowly deciphering a language we unknowingly communicate to a dimension beyond human vision.

As I blend light with dark, verdant to sere, I summon undefinable shapes to the forefront. In that space they reveal, like a Rorschach shape in reverse, an interwoven message, a call to answer.
